In 1990 the people of Japan came together to share the historic tradition of Hanami/Yozakura with the newly united German nation. Raising over €1 million through public donations, the Asahi Sakura Campaign resulted in the planting of 9000 trees in Berlin. Still standing proud today, the city’s TV-Asahi-Kirschblütenallee, or Cherry Blossom Alley, serves as a poignant memento of the shared connection between the two nations. 30 years on from this seminal campaign, adidas Originals celebrates cultural exchange with the ZX8000 Kirschblütenallee Pack.

So what is Kirschblütenallee Pack? For centuries the Japanese tradition of Hanami has welcomed the fresh bloom of Cherry Blossoms in Spring. In modern day Japan, the festival serves as an opportunity for friends to gather together on picnic mats to reflect and appreciate the unmatched beauty of Sakura – Cherry Blossoms. Sharing food, drinks, and songs, friends and family come together to celebrate the beauty of nature and in the process foster a powerful sense of community. As day fades to night, the festival continues, this time under the moniker of Yozakura.

In celebration of the culturally transcendent power of the tradition, adidas Originals has crafted two custom colourways of the iconic ZX8000 silhouette. Accentuating the understated beauty of Cherry Blossoms, the Hanami inspired colourway is made up in tonal pink with red hits throughout. Meanwhile, the Yozakura colourway perfectly encapsulates the festival’s move from day to night through a tonal grey palette and pink hits. Both colourways come replete with Tokyo and Berlin lace jewels, Sakura graphics on the tongue tab, picnic mat inspired insoles, and an extra set of laces.

Each sneaker then comes packaged in a specially designed pink box which features text explaining the cross-cultural significance of the Hanami/Yozakura tradition, cherry blossom shaped paper inserts, and custom graphics. Capping this off, the shoebox is graphically divided: one half made up in the style of a plaid German picnic mat and the other a Japanese blue tarpaulin mat.

The adidas ZX8000 ‘Kirschblütenallee’ Pack launches at limitEDitions WMNS on 28th March 2020.
